Augusta van Haga

Family lawyer, specialist in inheritance law and international child abduction

As a family lawyer, Augusta van Haga supports her clients during difficult, emotional, and life-changing moments. She stands by her clients with her specialist knowledge of inheritance law and her own experience. She provides advice or litigates when necessary. Augusta comes into play when there are issues with settling the inheritance after a death, when questions arise about the will, or when an executor does not perform their task or does not do so properly. Moreover, she assists one of the parents with ‘advice and action’ when there is disagreement about access, relocation, or other decisions about their child during or after a divorce. If a child has been brought to the Netherlands without permission, she assists the remaining or departing parent in a return procedure. Augusta also advises parents in the Netherlands and abroad in cases of outgoing or impending child abduction.

More about Augusta van Haga

Augusta has experience in dealing with stepparents, the intersection of different cultures, the death of a spouse and the settlement of an inheritance.

As a result, she possesses empathy and understanding for the non-legal aspects at play: loss, grief, and/or fear. This enriches the relationship and collaboration with the client, enabling Augusta to provide better support to her clients. Because of her years of experience, Augusta knows exceptionally well the types of cases in which she excels.

Specialist areas

Augusta specialises in the following legal subareas:

  • mediation
  • inheritance
  • custody disputes
  • international child abduction

Inheritance law and custody matters

Augusta specialises primarily in inheritance cases. It is crucial to settle an inheritance comprehensively, addressing legal, financial, and emotional aspects. That is why Augusta is dedicated to assisting her clients in the settlement of estates. She also handles more complex child custody and guardianship cases. These are situations where parents cannot reach a resolution on their own, legal proceedings ensue, and there is talk of a ‘messy divorce’.

Specialist legal knowledge is, of course, paramount. Augusta has acquired this expertise through the specialist training for family lawyers and inheritance lawyers at the vFAS (Association of Family and Inheritance Lawyers and Divorce Mediators).

Child abduction

Lastly, there are the international child abduction cases. Every parent facing an international child abduction should be able to receive specialist legal assistance, including subsidised legal aid. Often, a parent is a foreigner in the Netherlands or unfamiliar with Dutch laws. The parent may not speak the language, be unfamiliar with the legal system, and often does not know what steps to take. In these cases, Augusta can play a significant role by explaining the available options, acting swiftly, and establishing contact with other experts in the field, such as the Central Authority or CIKO.
